Free! returns with the Free! -Take Your Marks- anime film and the official website began streaming the first teaser video. The characters Coach Sasabe (Hiroshi Yanaka) and Amakata-sensei (Satsuki Yukino) narrate the video, describing each of the four stories that the film will consist of. Apart from the video, the new visual was released, while cast and staff names were announced. The film will premiere on October 28.

In addition, the summaries for the four stories featured in the film were revealed. Free! -Take Your Marks- will be a sequel to the Free! -Timeless Medley- films. The story takes place in March, while Haruka is dealing with graduation from high school. The film depicts four stories set in the days of early spring, before the characters advance to the next starting blocks of their futures, and what lies ahead.

#1 Unmei no Choice! (Fateful Choice!): Haruka visits Tokyo to look for a place to live for when he starts his college life there next month. Coach Sasabe recommended a real estate agent to Haruka, but when he arrives at the agent's office, he meets an unexpected character.

#2 Hitō no Cooling Down! (Cooling Down at the Secret Hot Spring!): Aiichirō and Momotarō are considering what to give Rin and Sōsuke as a graduation present. As they try to think of something that might surprise Rin and Sōsuke, Momotarō wins a premium lottery.

#3 Kessoku no Butterfly! (United Butterfly!): Starting in April, the Iwatobi High School Swim Club will only have Rei, Nagisa, and Gou. In order to recruit new members to the club, the three try their hardest to create an invitation promotional video, but...

#4 Tabidachi no Eternal Blue! (The Eternal Blue of Journeys to Come!): The Iwatobi High School Swim Club members plan a surprise party to say goodbye to Rin before he goes to Australia. But Rin happens to see Gou and Momotarō as they run errands together all around town for the party.

The cast returns to the original roles with the eight members of the Iwatobi High School Swim Club and the Samezuka Academy Swim Club, including Yoshimasa Hosoya as Sōsuke.

Eisaku Kawanami returns to the direction of the film, while Masahiro Yokotani is writing and overseeing the scripts. Futoshi Nishiya will once again design the characters, while the composition of the music will be handled by Tatsuya Katou. The production will be done by the Kyoto Animation and Animation DO. "Free-Style Spirit" will be the theme song of the film performed by Style Five.

The first Free! anime series premiered in July 2013. The second season titled Free! Eternal Summer followed in July 2014, while the High Speed! -Free! Starting Days- film premiered in December 2015.
