A few months ago there was an announcement about a new upcoming movie for Sword Art Online and we finally have more details. At the Dengeki Bunko Haru no Saiten 2016 event, the title of the film was revealed, which will be Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale and the story.

Ordinal Scale is the next game after the "Sword Art Online", "Alfheim Online" and "Gun Gale Online", in which Kirito and his friends will take part. This is a game that uses a new augmented virtual reality device called "Augma" and Ordinal Scale was designed especially for this. The game has a special feature where players can raise their rank by defeating monsters and using various objects.

This is a new story that takes place after the Mother's Rosario arc, which was the last arc that was depicted in the second season of the anime series. Reki Kawahara writes the story especially for this movie, while the production belongs to A-1 Pictures. Moreover, Shingo Adachi is returning to the design of characters.

During the event, it was also confirmed that Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu will return to their original roles as Kirito and Asuna. Finally, Yuki Kajiura will return to compose the film's soundtrack. Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale will open in Japan in 2017.
