Report: Cyprus Comic Con 2024 presented by ECOMMBX
by Mary Papapouliou
On the weekend of October 5th and 6th, we had the pleasure of attending the largest comic celebration in Cyprus – Cyprus Comic Con 2024! It's no exaggeration to say that this is the ultimate pop culture event, extending beyond Cyprus' borders, as there was an unexpected number of international visitors! Of course, we were especially thrilled to meet some familiar faces from Greece as well.
What we absolutely loved about Cyprus Comic Con is how well the event utilized both the indoor and outdoor spaces of the venue. This allowed for a dynamic mix of activities, ranging from live performances, cosplay, gaming tournaments, panels, and a film festival, to shopping, international special guests, and numerous street food vendors where you could try almost anything – even Japanese takoyaki!
However, the festival truly kicked off on Friday evening, October 4th, with a free-entry opening ceremony for all! Live music for all interests, food, drinks, and dancing were the main ingredients of the night. One unforgettable moment was watching Scorpion from Mortal Kombat perform an incredible fire show to the game’s music. The opening ceremony was something we'd never seen before at a festival or convention, and it's a great example for us in Greece to follow.
The Live Stage remained active throughout Cyprus Comic Con, with concerts and music performances, and after the exhibition halls closed, the party continued late into the night with epic beats from LevelUpLeroy & DJ Leon.
Despite the midday heat, it didn’t deter visitors. On Saturday especially, the venue was packed both inside and out.
Another highlight we’ll never forget from Cyprus Comic Con 2024 was the stunning cosplays. It’s one of the few events where we saw not only an impressive number of talented cosplayers but also families, with parents and children in cosplay. This added an extra layer of beauty and vibrancy to the atmosphere, making it truly feel like a comic celebration!
This year’s guests included our favorite Clinton Liberty and Simon Kassianides from the world of acting, while artists like Luke Pearson, Marc Ellerby, and David Wise were also in attendance. We were especially excited to meet our very own Odysseas Theodoratos (Mangaka Ody), who recently won the “Best International Webcomic Creator” award at the World Webtoon Awards 2024.
Congratulations to the organizers for putting together such a great event. We can’t wait for the next one!
