The most shocking disbandings of 2016
2016 was for many people a not so pleasant year and soon comes to an end. Through the numerous bad news, we had also many disbandments of favorite bands of the Japanese music scene, which shocked a lot of fans. An overview of bands that disbanded in 2016 follows below, the disbandment of which was an unpleased surprise.
girugamesh
girugamesh was one of the most iconic and successful bands with 12 years of presence in the visual kei music scene in Japan. 2016 began for them with the release of a mini-album entitled chimera in January and a European tour followed in the summer. The announcement of the band's disbandment shocked many fans and not only. Bassist Shuu is now active with KEEL, drummer Ryo is doing covers on his YouTube channel while Satoshi and Nii chose to distance themselves from the public eye. The band disbanded on 10 July.
BORN
Another popular visual kei band, BORN, disbanded after an 8 years career. Before creating BORN, the band members were already together known as Remy. The main cause of their disbandment was Ryoga, because he had low motivation, so many of the fans were irritated particularly with him. On the other hand, this disbandment led guitarist Ray to his withdrawal from the industry, as he had decided long time before that this band would be his last. K now continues with a solo career and Ryoga formed RAZOR. The only one to return to the scene is Tomo. Their last concert was held on May 26.
SCREW
SCREW was another band alongside BORN, which was well-known worldwide. After 10 years, they decided to disband and the reason was that the members felt they had reached their limits as a band. According to drummer Jin, after the departure of Yuto and Rui (former bassists of SCREW), they were able to remain positive, however, they eventually lost their goal. So far, no one returned with new projects, while guitarist Manabu stated that he is retiring from the music scene since SCREW was his “last deam”. The band officially disbanded on November 1.
Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei with their memorable music spent eight years together before deciding to disband. Many people got to know them from the opening theme of Ano Hana or the ending theme of the second Haikyuu season. According to the members, it was time to move on to better things, comparing their course in music as a child that grows, matures and no longer wants to keep his toys, but to explain their reasoning. All three promised to return with new projects. The band held their last live on April 10th.
BOOM BOOM SATELLITES
The disbandment of BOOM BOOM SATELLITES was not so surprising, but the shocking was the reason behind it. The vocalist Kawashima Miyuki suffered these last years from a brain tumor. The health problem had relapsed and the band was forced to take a break from their activities. It was the fifth time that his disease relapsed, however, many people were optimistic that he will overcome it once again. But things looked bad and their last concerts before going on hiatus were canceled due to a sudden deterioration. Kawashima returned to the band's activities, releasing their latest EP. His health then deteriorated again and forced to retire from the music industry, BOOM BOOM SATELLITES were led to their disbandment. Last October, Kawashima passed away.
DIV
DIV was a pretty popular band that emerged the last 2 years as one of the top bands n the Japanese music scene. The oshare kei style was what made them stand out, they signed with Danger Crue Records, one of the most popular record company. The disbandment came from the decision of bassist Chobi and drummer Satoshi to leave the band. The band disbanded on October 10 with their last live. Vocalist Chisa and guitarist Shogo continue together with new projects as a duo called Chisa & Shogo.
AvelCain
The last five years AvelCain had gained more and more popularity. From a five-man band went to three-man band in 2013, but in 2015 they gained a new drummer, giving the impression that they were aiming for greater things. However, quite early in 2016, the band announced their disbandment without stating the reason. Guitarist Kaede revealed that he’s leaving the music industry. AvelCain disbanded on 25 July.
